Hudson Printing is a local printing company in Salt Lake City that invited Hunt Electric to develop a PLC controlled quality assurance monitoring system. They needed a program that would ensure employees matched the correct binders to the correct booklet materials being bound by a high-speed binding machine. Our Automation and Controls team used high speed Cognex bar code scanners to detect and transfer data to an Allen Bradley CompactLogix PLC as they enter the binding machine. The barcodes are compared and if they match the machine continues binding the booklet. If they do not match, the machine shuts down and alerts the operator that incorrect materials have been loaded into the binding machine. You can imagine the negative impact to production and profits when a project is completed with the wrong binder or contents.
