Vivint Smart Home Arena - Rooftop Solar Array

Covering more than 80,000 square feet on the arena rooftop and generating nearly 700 kilowatts of energy, the panels were provided by Vivint Solar; Hunt Electric designed and installed the solar array. This solar installation is one of the initial upgrades made as part of an ongoing $125 million renovation by the Larry H. Miller Group of Companies of Vivint Smart Home Arena, which is now among the first professional sporting venues capable of generating its own energy.

"It was a privilege to couple our long-standing relationships with the Larry H. Miller Group and Vivint Solar to design and build a unique solar-powered solution for Vivint Smart Home Arena," said Richard Hunt, Hunt Electric CEO.

The new system is equivalent to completely offsetting the electricity for 100 homes per year or powering approximately 89 home games for the Utah Jazz. It is expected to produce enough energy to equal one million pounds of coal or the benefit of planting 5,000 trees.

Hunt Electric’s engineering team faced some unique challenges during the course of this project. Most notably, the height of the building exceeded the standard wind testing available for all racking solutions on the market. The owner also requested that we use a penetrated system instead of a ballasted one. Hunt Electric and solar racking manufacturer, Unirac were able to custom design a solution that resulted in a safe, long-lasting mount system for the Arena.

Another challenge Hunt Electric faced was a very tight construction schedule. The project took just over 2 months to design and construct. Safety to the general public and to our employees was a huge concern, material handling, craning items to the roof and scheduling work around events taking place in an operable facility were our biggest obstacles.
